Protocol for receptionist management of patient presenting with chest pain

Is the patient  or carer distressed?

Important questions?
Has the patient collapsed?
Is the patient SOB?
Yes

Interrupt GP to triage patient  immediately

Does the patient  look unwell ? 

  1. -distressed?

  2. -pale or sweaty?

  3. -clutching chest?

Inform GP 
Triage patient soon
Put patient in corridor
Inform nurse 
Initial patient assessment by nurse

Has the emergency line been used appropriately?

Urgent HV
Urgent appointment

Important questions?

  1. -Has the chest pain been present for less than 12hr?

  2. -Has the patient taken any analgesia? Has the medication had no effect ?

Yes
No
Inform GP 
Triage when next available
Ambulance
999 or admission
Assess and treat
Home with appropriate safety net agreed with patient
Urgent appointment
Routine appointment
Prescription +/- RV
If GP is not in the surgery inform patient to call 999 and inform doctor-on call asap.
